The Slog [Dec. 11th, 2009|11:58 am]
avengingsybil
Remember when I said that my primary goal before the baby comes was to do a super book cram? It's true that that's one goal, but I actually have another one that's going to require a bit more from my end, and that's to once and for all wrap up the novel I've been working on since 2006. It's currently in its third draft, and I feel like I'm really getting there, but I'm not actually there. My plan is to jump back in after the new year and to have it all tied up before I start timing my contractions. Since I don't exactly have an editor or adoring public clamoring for the manuscript, getting it done will require some sort of incentive beyond my own gestational deadline. Ideas? What do you reward yourself with when faced with a daunting task?

In the meantime, I'm totally digging The Sweet Life of Stella Madison, though it's such a summer book it feels funny to be reading it when it's 20 degrees outside. I've also been trying to get through the Alice miniseries on SyFy (the network's name change really bugs me), but it's not really doing it for me. Not even Harry Dean Stanton helped, and saying that feels like blasphemy. If nothing else it makes me look forward to the Tim Burton version that's in the works.

Happy Chanukah tonight to all who celebrate!

Blog tour [Dec. 7th, 2009|10:49 am]

Quickie break from my internet blackout (which is less than total -- I've been holiday shopping online a bit, and every now and then I look at Facebook or Twitter, but generally I have felt free of that compulsive checking and following of all kinds of unnecessary threads of info).

(Digression: I have only been doing a LITTLE bit of online shopping, because it's important to spend your holiday dollars at LOCAL businesses. Otherwise, the chains get all yr money and the little guys go under and then Manhattan is the same as the mall is the same as a small town and life is not as interesting or exciting.   I have bought a lot of gifts at Refinery, where a high school friend of mine makes the most gorgeous and affordable handbags, and stocks gorgeous gloves, pillows and jewelry.  Also bought books at Book Court, spa gifts at Area, toys at Area Kids. Support your local retailer!  The shopping is more fun that way, too, I think.)

Okay, what I really want to tell you about is my blog tour. I'll be at five different blogs this week, and the first is Little Willow's.  Each of the first four stops will reveal one of the four REDESIGNED RUBY OLIVER COVERS, beginning with The Boyfriend List!

These covers will launch along with Real Live Boyfriends, the fourth Ruby book, in December 2010. So go check it out!

The other links coming up later this week.

Back To It [Dec. 3rd, 2009|11:19 am]

All right, now that I've gotten my happy announcement out of the way I can get back to the business of being an unsentimental, overly critical lemon-sucker. Once I get some books read, that is. The preoccupation with the big change in my life combined with various bits of holiday madness have slashed my reading time and inclination. My goal now is to cram in as many books from my TBR pile as possible over the next four or so months, as I hear that caring for newborns doesn't leave a lot of time for reading. Maybe I'll have to switch to audiobooks for awhile?

While I have the luxury of two hands for page turning and such, first up on the docket is The Sweet Life of Stella Madison by the always fabulous Lara M. Zeises and (at long last) Nobokov's Lolita.

Thanks for all your well wishes. This is a pretty joyous time to be.
